If you have tried a Mermaid Experience or taster with us or elsewhere and what to progress this is the course for you. Mermaiding is not only great fun but excellent for fitness and water confidence. On the SSI Mermaid Course, you will take part in workshops and pool sessions to give you a comprehensive foundation as Mermaid or Merman. You will learn about the different types of tails and fins available; experience basic freediving breath hold techniques and then in water develop the skills to move thorough the water in comfort and confidence. On completion you will a certification that lets you use your Mermaid and Merman skills in a pool-based environment to depth of 5 metres. What is involved? You will take part in a half day workshop and breathing class and then have three pool sessions. What age is it suitable for? You must be 12 or over and confident enough to swim 25m with no aids. Do I have to own my own tail and fin? We will provide what you need. For larger foot sizes 4 plus we use Mahina mono fins but have some Mermaid Linden mono fins for smaller feet. Our tails fit a range of sizes and are all made locally to reduce our carbon footprint. What is included? They are always in the water, and we only have three students to a teacher. The goal is making lessons fun whilst ensuring that they understand water safety and sense around water. Your teacher works with each child in turn to correct, guide and encourage. Every child is an individual and the classes are tailored to match your child’s needs. They might be cautious or very confident, either way we work with them, so they develop at their own pace. We make all our classes inclusive and open to everyone, but if you have an aspect you would like to talk through just email us to discuss. Private lessons are available, but we find that working with their peers can help them progress and grow in confidence whilst being more fun for them. The tailored nature of group classes means if they are struggling with one aspect your SWIM teacher will adapt the teaching techniques to suit. You are advised at every stage of their progress. If you want to get exploring the ocean as soon as possible this is the programme for you. The SSI Basic Freediver program is a more in-depth introduction to the sport. Whether you are new to the sport, or if you already enjoy your snorkelling then this course will take it to the next level. It will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to plan, execute and enjoy freediving with your buddy to depths of 5 metres. The one-day program is perfect for those wishing to learn the concepts and to be more relaxed in the water. Enjoy exploring, photography and adventure to depths of 5m on certification. You will take part in academic workshops including equipment selection, use and maintenance, and a mini breathing workshop. You will transfer these skills into the real world with a pool and then open water session to fully prepare you for exploring in comfort and safety. Our beach at Selsey Lifeboat Station offers a perfect spot for training. Part of the Selsey Bill and Hounds Marine Conservation zone there is plenty of opportunity to discover the marine life whilst mastering your skills. Is there a minimum age? Have you every wondered what it would be like to breathe under water? Then an SSI Try Scuba Experience is the perfect place to start. Under the guidance of your SSI Instructor you will be introduced to the equipment, take your first underwater breaths and get to discover the feeling of weightlessness that comes with neutral buoyancy, within the comfort of a heated pool. During the hour your SSI Instructor will introduce to the equipment, putting on and adjusting for fit and comfort, before heading under water the first time. Each class only has two participants so you can get the maximum benefit from your experience. At what age can they take part? What is Free Immersion? It is freediving using a line on both the way down and up, rather than your fins. Free Immersion is slower than constant weight. You work slowly towards depth, giving you time to focus on equalisation. If you have struggled to master head-down equalisation, then the head-up free immersion technique can help. By gently extending your depth and comfort Free Immersion is a relaxed and graceful discipline. Feel yourself glide through the water knowing you can stop to equalise as you need. You will see not only your confidence, but depth grow as you progress in Free Immersion. You need to be at least a Pool Freediver (or equivalent) to take part in the Free Immersion Course. After the workshop with your instructor you will take part in open water training sessions in the sea at Selsey, West Sussex, and other locations on the South Coast. Is there a minimum age? Sea Turtles are much-loved marine residents, from Disney characters to inspiring art and culture they appeal to all ages. The SSI Sea Turtle Ecology Course is designed to provide you with knowledge to deepen understanding and connection to them. You will learn how to be able to identify the common sea turtles you see on your ocean adventures and travels. Looking look into the history of their development, their role in ecosystems and threats that they face. Living for between 50 and 100 years investigate how they spend their time and the incredible efforts that go into producing the next generation of sea turtles. We will bring it home to the UK with an additional section on the sea turtles you are likely to encounter in the UK – yes they are known here! All but one species has been sighted around the coast of UK and Ireland. Who is suitable for? Anyone aged over six who has an interest in marine ecology. Do I have to get in the water? No this is a land-based course open to everyone with an interest. Certified Snorkel Divers and Open Water Divers have the option to add an additional open water session. During the SSI Shark Ecology Course, we will help you replace the fiction around sharks with fact. You will then be able to determine for yourself if that reputation is deserved. You will look at human relationships with sharks over time and cultures, how they fit into ecosystems, the history of the evolution of sharks, learn about their biology and adaptions to life as a predator. At Mulberry Marine Experiences we know that not everyone has a buddy or opportunity to go diving as often they would like and when new to a site you may not be sure of currents, conditions and best times to go diving. Our Marshalled shore dives are designed to help solve these concerns for our certified divers. Selsey is fortunate to have an accessible shore dive along East Beach, that allows you to explore the Marine Conservation Zone laying just off the beach. We have regular and seasonal visitors that include cat sharks, rays, pipefish, seahorses, nudibranchs, crabs, wrasse, anemones and much more. With a maximum depth of 6 metres there is plenty of time for exploring, creature spotting and for taking pictures. Every Marshalled Dive is supported by Mulberry Staff who are first aid trained and ready to assist. They will meet you and make introductions to buddy pairs if you have not met before, provide you with a full briefing for the site and then stay as surface cover for your dive. We include 12L cylinders with air and 10 kg block weight on a belt as part of the booking, if you do not require just drop us an email. Your surface cover will meet you on Lifeboat Station Green 30 minutes before estimated dive time, so we recommend that you have set up your equipment ready for the briefing. You must have a DSMB and reel each and a timing device. Selsey is a working beach and DSMBs are essential. I do not have a buddy can I book on a Marshalled Dive? Yes, we will match you up and make introductions before the briefing. Please be aware the price is based on a minimum of 3 divers for the event. I have never dived in the UK are these suitable for me? They make a great first sea dive experience in the UK. Can I hire other equipment? Yes, we do offer equipment rental, why not check out the pricing plans to include equipment with you dive and save a little money. We do not hire mask, snorkels, gloves, hoods, DSMBS and Reels (included with some wet suits). All equipment must be hired in advance please contact us with your requirements.
